Leeds Rhinos Youngster Shines in Defeat Against Warrington Wolves
On Thursday evening, 19-year-old Leeds Rhinos youngster Ned McCormack made his mark in the Round 17 clash against Warrington Wolves, scoring his first-ever senior try for the club. However, the promising moment was dampened by a hamstring issue that forced him off the field.
Making just his third senior appearance under the guidance of new head coach Brad Arthur, McCormack darted over the line in the 53rd minute, helping the Rhinos cut the deficit to 10 points at 24-14. This came shortly after his only other senior career try, which he scored for Halifax Panthers towards the end of May while on dual-registration.
“As Rhyse Martin prepared to convert McCormack’s try, the cameras captured the teenager being assisted off the field by the Rhinos’ medical staff, with a hamstring problem ruling him out of the remainder of the contest.”
Despite the setback, the rugby league results for the evening saw the Rhinos trail 30-18 at the time of writing, with just three minutes left on the clock in Cheshire. Earlier in the match, Warrington had raced into a 24-4 lead at the break, thanks to tries from Matty Ashton, Matt Dufty (2) and Rodrick Tai.
- A try from Leeds’ Lachie Miller was followed by McCormack’s score, offering the visitors hope of a comeback.
- However, the home side’s Tom Whitehead extinguished those aspirations with a try of his own.
- A late try from Paul Momirovski and a yellow card to Warrington’s Ashton provided a glimmer of hope for the Rhinos, but the final score remained 30-18.
The rugby league scores on the night highlighted the challenge facing Leeds, but the emergence of talents like McCormack offers encouragement for the future as the team looks to navigate its way through the 2023 season under the new leadership of Brad Arthur.
