Welsh Rugby Union Faces Mounting Pressure as National Team Slips to 11th in World Rankings
Cardiff, Wales – The Welsh rugby union team has tumbled to their worst ever world ranking, falling outside of the top 10 for the first time in their history. The defeat to Australia marks their eighth consecutive loss, following a disappointing exit at the recent World Cup.
Fiji’s 21-12 victory over Georgia has seen them leapfrog Wales in the official World Rugby rankings, leaving the Welsh side in 11th place on 76.58 points. Prior to this latest setback, Wales had been sitting at 77.26 points.
The pressure is quickly mounting on head coach Warren Gatland, who returned to the role late last year after a difficult Autumn Nations Series under his predecessor, Wayne Pivac. Since Gatland’s return, Wales have managed just six wins from 20 matches, finishing fifth in this year’s Six Nations and losing all five of their fixtures.
“Despite showing signs of improvement and defeating England in a World Cup warm-up, Wales’ campaign at the global showpiece ended in disappointment as they fell to Argentina in the quarter-finals.”
Their poor form has continued, with heavy defeats to South Africa and now the Wallabies.
The challenge for the experienced Gatland will be to turn around his side’s fortunes, but the pressure is certainly mounting as the Welsh rugby union team finds themselves in uncharted territory outside the top 10 in the world rankings.
