Matty Russell’s Busy 2024 Season Sees Him Join His 7th Super League Club
Scotland international Matty Russell’s debut for Leeds Rhinos on Friday night at St Helens is his third Super League club this season alone. However, the versatile back has now represented an impressive seven top-flight teams throughout his career.
Russell, who turned 31 last month, first debuted in Super League for Wigan Warriors back in 2012, featuring twice and scoring three tries. Since then, the Irvine-born winger/fullback has gone on to represent Hull FC, Warrington Wolves, Toronto Wolfpack, Leigh Centurions, Toulouse Olympique, and now Leeds Rhinos.
“With 200 career club appearances now just two games away, Russell’s journeyman status is unmatched in the modern Super League era.”
The 13-time Scotland international, who also spent time in Australia’s NRL with Gold Coast Titans, has firmly established himself as one of the competition’s most well-traveled players.
Warrington remain the club Russell has represented the most, featuring 112 times for the Wolves to date. His latest switch to Leeds on an initial two-month loan deal earlier this month has taken his tally of clubs played for in 2024 up to three.
Russell isn’t the only Super League nomad, however. Veteran fullback Gareth O’Brien tops the list, having represented an incredible seven different clubs in the competition, including the likes of Warrington, Widnes, Castleford, St Helens, and most recently, Leigh.
Meanwhile, Danny Tickle and Tommy Lee have both featured for six and eight Super League clubs respectively throughout their careers, showcasing the ever-evolving nature of player movement in the modern game.
As the 2024 Super League season continues to unfold, it will be fascinating to see if any other players can match or even surpass the club appearance records set by these seasoned professionals.
