Leigh Leopards Owner Supports ‘Captain’s Challenge’ in Super League
In a recent interview, Leigh Leopards owner Derek Beaumont has expressed strong support for the introduction of a ‘Captain’s Challenge’ in the Super League.
“I’m one million percent in favor of the Captain’s Challenge.”
Beaumont stated that the intention was to introduce the rule this year, with every game being broadcast on Sky Sports and having a video referee available. However, concerns were raised about the number of camera angles required to thoroughly review all incidents.
The Leigh Leopards owner explained that under the Captain’s Challenge system, the team captain can call for a review of a specific decision from anywhere on the field. Even if the footage proves to be inconclusive, the on-field call would still stand, providing a clear-cut process for contesting questionable decisions.
Beaumont believes that the Captain’s Challenge rule would be “massively important” for the referees, as it would help them make more accurate calls. He acknowledged that officials do not make mistakes intentionally and that the new rule would allow them to become “perfect” by utilizing the multiple camera angles available through the Sky Sports deal.
The controversial owner has also made headlines this year for publicly criticizing his own social media team on X (formerly Twitter). This latest call for the Captain’s Challenge comes as Leigh Leopards prepare to host the league-leading Catalans Dragons this weekend.
