Veteran Munster Back Simon Zebo Announces Retirement at Season’s End
Munster and former Ireland international Simon Zebo has revealed that he will hang up his boots at the conclusion of the current campaign. The versatile back, who earned 35 caps for Ireland between 2012 and 2017, is his province’s all-time leading try-scorer with 72 tries in 173 appearances.
Zebo, who toured Australia with the British and Irish Lions in 2013, played a pivotal role in Munster’s United Rugby Championship triumph last season after returning from a three-year stint in France with Racing 92. Despite an injury-hit 2021-22 season, the 34-year-old has enjoyed a resurgent campaign, helping his side climb to the top of the URC table with eight consecutive victories.
“After much thought, I’ve decided that this season will be my last playing the game I love,” Zebo said. “It has been a dream come true, making memories and friends for life and travelling the world with amazing people. I’ve loved every second, it’s been some craic and I can’t wait to see what’s next.”
Zebo, who won the 2015 Six Nations with Ireland, will depart Munster with a lasting legacy as the province’s all-time leading try-scorer. His retirement marks the end of an illustrious career that saw him represent both his country and the prestigious British and Irish Lions.
