Rugby League News: Leeds Rhinos Grapple with Mounting Injury Woes
As Leeds Rhinos head coach Rohan Smith navigates a challenging period, his team’s 18-12 win over Super League strugglers Hull FC has left much to be desired. The narrow victory, which was predicted to be a 40-point blowout by Sky Sports pundit Sam Tomkins, has put Smith under increased scrutiny.
The one bright spot for the Rhinos was the debut performance of 17-year-old Riley Lumb, who scored two tries. However, the team’s overall display was described as “turgid” by critics.
Injury Crisis Deepens
The injury crisis at Leeds Rhinos has deepened, with several key players sidelined. Off-season recruit Paul Momirovski has suffered a recurrence of an ankle injury and will need to see a specialist to determine the full extent of the problem. “It’s more serious than last time,” Smith confirmed.
The Rhinos will also be without forwards Tom Holroyd and James Bentley, both of whom are dealing with the symptoms of concussion. The club is taking a cautious approach, with Holroyd set to see a consultant, and Bentley making gradual progress in his recovery.
Glimmer of Hope
There is some better news for Leeds, as Ash Handley and Harry Newman are expected to return soon. However, Smith is unsure whether they will be risked against London Broncos this weekend, as he may prefer to target the tougher trip to Perpignan the following week.
“With anything less than a convincing win against London likely to heap further pressure on the beleaguered Rhinos boss, Smith will be hoping his squad can overcome their mounting injury woes and find a way to turn their season around.”
