Hurricanes Captain Brad Shields’ Son Picks Rival Player Over His Dad
In the world of professional sports, parents are often the heroes that young athletes aspire to emulate. However, that doesn’t seem to be the case for Hurricanes captain Brad Shields’ son, Franco.
Shields was joined by his children for the post-match interview following the Hurricanes’ 32-24 victory over Moana Pasifika on Friday. When the interviewer asked the back-row’s children for their favorite player, daughter Charley responded as expected with “daddy.” But Franco’s answer took everyone by surprise – he hilariously declared, “Jordie Barrett.”
Shields couldn’t help but laugh along with the interviewer, who then quipped, “Dad’s got some work to do there,” before shifting the focus back to the studio.
Hurricanes Reclaim Top Spot
While Barrett wasn’t playing in the match as the Hurricanes rested several key players, the team still managed to reclaim the top spot in the Super Rugby Pacific table. The closely contested affair saw both sides score four tries apiece, with Raymond Tuputupu, Siale Lauaki, Richard Judd and Peter Lakai crossing the line for the Hurricanes. Sione Mafileo, Abraham Pole, Fine Inisi and Alamanda Motuga responded for Moana Pasifika, but they were unable to earn a losing bonus point.
“That was a crazy game, we’re happy to get through that one,” Shields said. “When you let Moana get up a bit of steam and energy, they are a difficult team to handle, but I am proud of the way the boys stuck at it.”
Ultimately, it was the Hurricanes’ superior kicking game that proved to be the difference, with Aidan Morgan contributing three conversions and two penalties.
Looking Ahead to the Chiefs Match
The Hurricanes’ victory moves them above the Blues and to the summit of the Super Rugby Pacific standings, though the Aucklanders have an opportunity to reclaim the top spot when they take on the Highlanders on Saturday.
As for the Hurricanes, they will focus on improving their performance when they face the Chiefs away from home in Round 14 of the competition. “We’ll have to tighten our screws a bit coming into the next game,” Shields added.
