The rugby league community is mourning the loss of a beloved icon, Leeds Rhinos legend Rob Burrow, who tragically succumbed to his four-and-a-half-year battle with Motor Neurone Disease on Sunday evening. In the wake of this devastating news, Warrington Wolves boss Sam Burgess has expressed his desire to honor Burrow’s life and legacy during the upcoming Challenge Cup Final at Wembley.

Burgess, who has personal experience with the devastating effects of MND, having lost his own father to the condition in 2007, spoke emotionally about Burrow’s fight and the impact it has had on his family.

“We all know the end result with Motor Neurone Disease. It doesn’t really discriminate. It’s really aggressive. We know as a family first-hand exactly what it’s like.”

The Warrington head coach is now calling for a sellout crowd at Wembley to celebrate Burrow’s remarkable achievements both on and off the field.

“Hopefully we can sell the place out and really celebrate the life of Rob Burrow. If you could pin down a week in the calendar – it’s fitting that it’s on the big stage at Wembley.”

Burgess is hopeful that the three matches scheduled for the day will provide the perfect platform to honor Burrow’s legacy, which includes two Challenge Cup victories with the Leeds Rhinos.

“All [his] achievements, not just on the field but off the field, hopefully we can celebrate them in style with a smile on the face and remember him for what a special character he was.”

The RFL has confirmed that a minute’s silence will be held before the final, followed by a round of applause in the seventh minute – a tribute to Burrow’s iconic shirt number, which has been central to the countless fundraising efforts led by his former teammate, Kevin Sinfield.

As the rugby league community comes together to mourn the loss of one of its most beloved figures, Warrington Wolves and their supporters are poised to deliver a fitting tribute to the life and legacy of Rob Burrow, a true inspiration to all.
