Harlequins Secure Experienced Australian Coach Jason Gilmore as New Defence Coach
In a significant move, Harlequins have found their replacement for the departing Jerry Flannery, who joined the Springboks’ coaching staff earlier this year. The former Ireland hooker parted ways with the “Famous Quarters” mid-season, linking up with Rassie Erasmus’ coaching team ahead of the international season.
The Londoners have now secured the services of experienced Australian coach Jason Gilmore as their new men’s defence coach. Gilmore’s arrival is subject to visa and work permit approval, but Harlequins have already confirmed his appointment.
Impressive Coaching Resume
The vastly experienced coach boasts an impressive resume, having served as head coach for Australia A, Australia U20s, and the Barbarians. He also held assistant coach and defence coach roles with the Waratahs and Queensland Reds. Gilmore’s most notable achievement was leading the Junior Wallabies to a second-place finish at the 2019 World Cup U20 Championship.
“Jason is someone we have been really impressed with. He’s a hardnosed defence coach who brings a wealth of experience and expertise to our coaching programme. We know he’ll adapt quickly to our environment and we’re confident he’ll bring significant improvements to our game.”
- Billy Millard, Harlequins Director of Rugby
The BBC Rugby Union news article also highlights that Gilmore is not the only coaching change at Harlequins, as former head coach Tabai Matson has returned to New Zealand after serving as the director of performance development last season.
As Harlequins prepare for the upcoming 2023/24 campaign, the addition of Jason Gilmore as the new defence coach is expected to bolster their defensive efforts and continue the club’s pursuit of success in the Premiership. Rugby enthusiasts will be keen to see how Gilmore’s expertise and coaching philosophy contribute to Harlequins’ performance on the pitch.
