Preparing for a Formidable All Blacks Challenge: England Coach Highlights the Importance of a Strong Set-Piece
As the England national rugby union team gears up to face the mighty All Blacks this weekend, head coach Richard Wigglesworth insists that it’s not just the visitors’ dangerous backline and powerful carriers that his side must be wary of.
The New Zealand rugby union team is renowned for their speed, tempo, and creativity, and that reputation is expected to continue under the guidance of new head coach Scott Robertson. However, Wigglesworth emphasizes that the All Blacks have also transformed their set-piece in recent times, thanks to the arrival of forwards guru Jason Ryan.
“What everyone’s underestimated in the past about New Zealand is how good their set-piece is to allow the athletes and the skill-based players they have to shine,” Wigglesworth told The Breakdown. “Since Jason Ryan’s come in, that set-piece has gone through the roof. You know that is an absolute staple of rugby, that you need a strong set-piece.”
The impressive performances of the All Blacks’ front-row trio of Ethan de Groot, Codie Taylor, and Tyrel Lomax, as well as the leadership of lock Scott Barrett, have been crucial in their march to the Rugby World Cup final in 2023, where they narrowly lost to the Springboks.
While the experienced Brodie Retallick and Sam Whitelock have departed, the All Blacks’ first-choice front five remains a formidable unit, posing a significant challenge for the England national rugby union team.
Adapting to the Challenge
“We want to be adaptable because every game is different,” Wigglesworth explained. “Some games are in the driving rain and are forward dominated. You have to be able to compete and do that.”
England, under the guidance of Steve Borthwick, have shown signs of improvement in recent months, including a dominant victory over Japan in their preparations for this two-Test series against the All Blacks. With a mix of seasoned veterans and exciting young talents in the backline, the home side is determined to present a stern test for the visitors.
Wigglesworth acknowledges the challenge ahead, stating, “We know what they will be which is a good All Blacks team.” As both sides gear up for a highly anticipated clash, the battle up front is set to be a key factor in determining the outcome.
