“I don’t come from money. So rugby was my thing and I had to make it work,” the World Cup winner shared with Planet Rugby.

Reflecting on his journey, Williams emphasized the value of the club rugby system as a viable pathway to the top. “If you look at club rugby as just club rugby, then you will remain a club rugby player, but if you look at it as a stepping stone to better yourself, it can take you far.”
The Springbok veteran’s debut in 2021 was a pivotal moment, as he immersed himself in the national team environment and learned from experienced players like Faf de Klerk and Herschel Jantjies.
“It was just amazing,” he recalled, “meeting guys like Morne Steyn who just welcomed me with open arms.”
Overcoming Challenges
The 2023 World Cup presented Williams with another challenge, as he faced the prospect of missing out on selection after a concussion scare. However, he persevered and ultimately earned his place in the squad, making appearances both at scrum-half and on the wing – a testament to his adaptability and versatility.
As the Sharks prepare for the Challenge Cup final against Gloucester, Williams and his teammates are eager to end the season on a high note. “There is a great opportunity,” he said, reflecting on the chance to capture a trophy.
