The HSBC SVNS Series has seen a resurgent France squad make their mark, and their latest triumph at the Madrid Rugby Sevens has solidified their status as a rugby sevens powerhouse.

Just months after ending their nearly two-decade cup final drought with a decisive victory over Great Britain in Los Angeles, France continued their impressive run with a commanding 38-5 win over Australia in the pool stage at Civitas Metropolitano Stadium.

Led by the electric performances of Paulin Riva, Jordan Sepho, and a host of other talented players, France showcased their depth and versatility, running in five tries and keeping the Aussies at bay.

“It’s a pretty unique tournament experience, so there’s a lot of stress, a lot of pressure, a lot of nerves before starting off,” admitted France’s Aaron Grandidier Nkanang. “But I’m really proud of the team to have responded to that pressure in such a positive way.”

With former 15s star Antoine Dupont watching from the sidelines, France’s cohesive unit proved too much for the Australians, steamrolling their way to a comfortable victory.

“Having won that in LA has proved to us and it’s proved to everyone that we are capable of putting it all together in a tournament,” Grandidier Nkanang added. “We’ve got such a deep squad, and we’ve got all the tools in the bag to get it done this weekend.”

As the SVNS Series Grand Final takes center stage in the Spanish capital, France will face off against fellow pool contenders Argentina and Great Britain, determined to cement their status as the team to beat in rugby sevens.
