Man Charged in Alleged Racist Incident Involving Ugo Monye
In a significant development, Devon and Cornwall Police have charged a man in connection with allegations of racist harassment towards former England rugby union international Ugo Monye. The incident is said to have occurred at an Exeter Chiefs match against Gloucester in November 2023.
According to the police statement, 31-year-old Angus Beukes has been summoned to appear before Exeter Magistrates’ Court on July 24, where he will be charged with “racially/religiously aggravated harassment/alarm/distress by words/writing.” The charge is related to an incident on November 19, 2023, in the vicinity of Sandy Park, the home stadium of Exeter Chiefs.
“the most blatant racism” he had seen from a supporter at a live rugby match, adding that no one in the crowd challenged or reported the abusive behavior.
Monye, the 40-year-old former Harlequins and British and Irish Lions wing, who now works as a television pundit, had previously spoken out about the incident on social media.
Response from Exeter Chiefs and the Rugby Football Union
Exeter Chiefs swiftly condemned the alleged racist abuse, vowing to launch a full investigation and stating that such “behavior will not be tolerated at our rugby club.” The Rugby Football Union (RFU) also expressed its outrage, affirming its support for Monye and emphasizing that “racism cannot be accepted in our sport.”
The authorities have emphasized the need to respect the ongoing legal proceedings and have urged the public to refrain from speculating or commenting on social media in a way that could prejudice the case. The rugby community eagerly awaits the outcome of this important matter, which serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing work required to combat racism and promote inclusivity within the sport.
