Rugby Union: Newcastle Falcons Conclude Dismal Season with Gloucester Defeat

In a disappointing end to their Gallagher Premiership campaign, the Newcastle Falcons were thoroughly outmatched by Gloucester, suffering a 54-14 defeat at Kingsholm on Saturday. This latest result saw the Falcons become the third team in Premiership history, after Rotherham in 2003/04 and London Welsh in 2014/15, to go an entire league season without recording a single victory.

The Falcons, who were coming off a 90-0 thrashing at the hands of Northampton Saints last week, were unable to turn their fortunes around as Gloucester secured a convincing win. Despite the victory, it was not enough for the home side to avoid their worst-ever Premiership season in terms of statistical performance.

“The result leaves the Falcons with a mere five points from their 18 league fixtures, a stark contrast to Gloucester’s strong finish.”

Gloucester’s tries were scored by Zach Mercer, Chris Harris, Charlie Atkinson, Ollie Thorley, Seb Blake, Jonny May, Alex Hearle, and Josh Hathaway, with Caolan Englefield converting five and Stephen Varney and Santiago Socino each adding a conversion. For the Falcons, Jamie Blamire and Matias Moroni scored the tries, both of which were converted by Brett Connon.

As Gloucester prepare to face the Sharks in the European Challenge Cup final next week, the Falcons will reflect on a challenging rugby union season that saw them become the latest team to fail to record a single victory in the Premiership.
