England Name 33-Player Training Camp Ahead of Summer Tests
In a move that has rugby enthusiasts buzzing, England head coach Steve Borthwick has announced a 33-player training camp in preparation for the upcoming summer internationals. The squad, named on Monday, features the return of Tom Curry, who has been sidelined since the Rugby World Cup due to hip surgery.
Curry, who will be joined by twin brother Ben, is one of the notable inclusions in a group that excludes players from Premiership finalists Northampton Saints and Bath. The Sale Sharks flanker made his first appearance since October in last weekend’s Premiership semi-final defeat to Bath.
England’s summer schedule includes a clash with Japan on June 22, followed by a two-Test series against the mighty All Blacks on July 6 and July 13, both of which will be live on Sky Sports.
Prop Bevan Rodd earns a recall, while his Sale Sharks teammates Raffi Quirke and uncapped Joe Carpenter will also have the chance to impress Borthwick and secure a spot in the final touring party. Other forward additions include Harlequins’ Fin Baxter, Exeter’s Greg Fisilau and Rusi Tuima, and Bristol’s Gabriel Oghre.
In the backline, Gloucester’s Charlie Atkinson, Harlequins’ Luke Northmore, Bristol’s Harry Randall, and Sale’s Tom Roebuck have been included. Leicester Tigers scrum-half Jack van Poortvliet, who has been sidelined with injury, also returns to the fold.
“The 33 players will take part in a four-day training camp starting on Tuesday, June 4, before Borthwick names his official touring squad for the summer Tests on Monday, June 10.”
