England Readies for Tough Rugby League Clash Against France in Toulouse
As England’s rugby league squad prepares for a mid-season test against France in Toulouse this weekend, it’s been nearly 15 years since they last visited the historic French city. The last time England faced off against France in Toulouse was back in 2008, and it was a memorable victory for the visitors as they cruised to a 56-8 triumph.
The England squad that day featured some of the greatest players to ever don the red and white jersey. From fullback Paul Wellens, who later became St Helens’ head coach, to legendary forward Adrian Morley, this was a lineup stacked with rugby league talent.
Other standout performers included winger Ade Gardner, center Keith Senior, and iconic halfback Rob Burrow, who sadly passed away in 2022 after a courageous battle with motor neurone disease. The team was led by coach Tony Smith, who had an illustrious career guiding the likes of Huddersfield, Leeds, Warrington, and the England national team.
“While England will be seeking to recreate that dominant display against France this weekend, the landscape of rugby league has shifted considerably since 2008.”
Many of the heroes from that match have moved on, with some taking up coaching roles or transitioning to media work. As England’s current crop prepares for the tough challenge ahead, they’ll be hoping to channel the same spirit and skill that propelled their predecessors to such a resounding victory in Toulouse over a decade ago.
