England Women’s Squad Bolstered by Specialist Session with Jamie George
In a strategic move to bolster their preparations for the pivotal Women’s Six Nations clash with Wales, the England Red Roses have enlisted the expertise of none other than Jamie George, the esteemed captain of the England men’s team.
On Wednesday, the experienced hooker joined the Red Roses’ training camp, offering specialized guidance to the quartet of hookers in the squad for the upcoming tournament. George’s involvement stems from his prior working relationship with Red Roses head coach John Mitchell, who had collaborated with the seasoned player during Mitchell’s time as an assistant to Eddie Jones.
“I worked with Jamie before,” Mitchell explained after making seven changes to his side for the fixture in Bristol on Saturday. “He is a good human being. He’s one of the lads I enjoyed when I was in the environment and have remained close to since.”
The decision to incorporate George’s expertise was not a coerced one, as the player himself had proactively reached out to Mitchell, offering his assistance when the latter assumed his role last year. “Way back when I got this role, he said if you ever need any help, just sing out. He was the one who actually encouraged it for this situation,” Mitchell revealed.
The cross-pollination between the men’s and women’s squads in specialist positions is a strategic move that the Red Roses are exploring judiciously. “It’s not something we’ll do in abundance, but the nines call also probably benefit from some kicking connections as well. It’s a starting point, which is fantastic,” Mitchell added.
Coaching Support for the Red Roses
The Red Roses continue to benefit from the support of a larger coaching network, including the experienced Brian Ashton, who guided England’s men to the World Cup final in 2007, as well as young assistants Sarah Hunter, Lou Meadows, and Louis Deacon. Scrum coach Nathan Catt has also provided valuable tutelage to the team’s front row during the tournament.
Anticipation for the Wales Clash
As the Red Roses prepare to face Wales at Ashton Gate on Saturday, the squad is ready to showcase their skills in front of an expected crowd of around 20,000 supporters. Captain Marlie Packer is anticipating a “real buzz” around the stadium, with the proximity to the Welsh border ensuring a lively atmosphere.
With the inclusion of Jamie George’s expertise and the continued support of their coaching staff, the Red Roses are poised to deliver a commanding performance and continue their pursuit of success in the Women’s Six Nations.
