Crusaders Coach Rob Penney Stands Firm Amidst Intensifying Pressure
Penney Remains Committed to the Team Despite Challenging Season
Crusaders head coach Rob Penney has firmly asserted his commitment to the team, rebuffing any suggestion of stepping down despite the side’s challenging 2-10 season so far. In a tense media exchange, Penney was unequivocal in his response, stating bluntly, “No, I’m boxing on, the same as always.“
The experienced tactician, who is contracted through 2025, remained steadfast in his position, even when questioned about a potential Director of Rugby role. “Don’t know why that would be muted,” Penney replied, as the interview spiralled into an awkward back-and-forth.
Penney was quick to dismiss the notion that he appeared “defeated” after the Crusaders’ recent loss to the Brumbies. “Disappointed for the boys, fundamentally,” was how he described his emotions, emphasizing the collective responsibility shared by the team.
When pressed on whether he would do anything differently, the coach repeatedly asked, “In what way?” before identifying the “critical moments” as the primary factor behind the Crusaders’ struggles this season. “We’ve been close a number of times, there has been moments where for one reason or another we haven’t won the pressure points, get ourselves in front or have consistency,” he observed.
Playoff Hopes Remain Alive
Despite the challenges, Penney remained steadfast in his belief that the Crusaders’ season is still alive, with the possibility of qualifying for the playoffs should they win their remaining two fixtures, starting with a crucial clash against the Blues this weekend.
The former Waratahs and Canterbury head coach’s unwavering commitment to the Crusaders was evident throughout the exchange, as he reiterated, “All I know is everyone in the organisation is working really hard to get the outcomes that are deserving and we would love to see.“
