Rugby Union News: Cornwall Women Pushed Reigning Champions Hampshire to the Limit
Truro, Cornwall – In a closely contested Gill Burns Cup Division 2 clash, the Cornwall Women’s rugby team put up a spirited fight against the reigning champions, Hampshire Women, at St Clements Hill in Truro.
Despite the visitors’ pedigree, featuring players predominantly from the Havant and Trojans clubs, the Cornwall side played with immense heart and determination, making life difficult for the experienced Hampshire outfit.
Cornwall captain Amy Bunt led her team onto the pitch through a guard of honour formed by the children of past and present Cornwall Women players, setting the tone for a passionate performance.
Early Stages
The early stages saw both defenses stand firm, with the Cornwall players putting in some crunching tackles to thwart the Hampshire attack. However, the visitors eventually broke through, with Abi Pearson setting up Becky Fenn for an unconverted try in the corner.
Hampshire pressed for a further advantage, but the Cornish defense, led by the impressive Bunt, held firm, denying the champions until the second half. Early in the second period, Pearson capitalized on a missed tackle to score Hampshire’s second try, which Rose Brown converted.
Cornwall’s Comeback
Undeterred, Cornwall responded with a well-worked try from Jenna Arnold, sparking roars of approval from the home crowd. With the backs looking lively, it was Tia Larson who touched down Cornwall’s second try, setting up a tense finish.
Hampshire eventually secured the bonus-point win with a late try, but the drained look on their faces was a testament to the tough battle they had endured against the spirited Cornwall side.
“We’ve come a long way from last season’s scoreline. The girls have taken on board everything we asked of them, and Hampshire were surprised by our play today.”
- Cornwall coach Jo Holden
With this strong showing, Cornwall will look to build on their progress as they prepare to face Hertfordshire next Sunday.
