Rugby League: England and Wales Students Set for Thrilling Two-Match Series
In a highly anticipated clash, the old rivals England and Wales Students are set to face off in a two-match series later this month. The action will kick off on Sunday, June 30th, at 3 pm, as Wales host England at the Aberavon Harlequins RFC. The teams will then reconvene six days later on Saturday, July 6th, at 2:30 pm, with England welcoming Wales to the Arthur Miller Stadium in Stanningley, Leeds, the very venue where Wales secured the Student Four Nations title in 2009.
The Series: A Replacement for Student Four Nations
The series comes as a replacement for the scheduled Student Four Nations tournament, which will not take place in 2024 due to the unavailability of Scotland and Ireland. Wales Students head coach Craig Fisher expressed his team’s intent to put their best foot forward, saying:
“We intend on putting our best foot forward to get a result in both games in what has been a very disrupted and frustrating year for our student programme.”
Wales Students: Motivated by Home Crowd and Squad Member’s Memory
Wales will enter the matches on the back of a convincing win over the JES Group Rugby League Conference leaders, South Wales Jets, in a friendly match that paid tribute to their squad member, Gabriel Holt, who sadly passed away earlier this year. Fisher is confident that the home crowd and Holt’s spirit will provide the extra motivation needed to topple England.
England Universities: Seeking Continued Success
England, on the other hand, will be well-prepared, having secured a 24-0 victory over the UK Armed Forces in the RFL President’s Cup last week. They will be looking to continue their winning streak as they aim to be crowned back-to-back champions in their upcoming match against Great Britain Teachers on Wednesday.
England Universities Team Manager, David Butler, expressed his delight at the opportunity to renew the rivalry with Wales, saying:
“It’s very disappointing that we won’t have a Student Four Nations this year, but we’ve heard about the progress that Wales have been making and look forward to renewing our rivalry with them over this series.”
Fans can look forward to an enthralling series as these two rugby league powerhouses battle it out on the field. Admission for the first match in Aberavon is £5 for adults, with U16s admitted free of charge.
