BBC Rugby Union: Chiefs Scrum-Half Ratima Eager for Showdown with Hurricanes Veteran Perenara
(Wellington, May 27) As the Super Rugby Pacific semi-finals approach, Chiefs scrum-half Cortez Ratima is relishing the opportunity to face off against All Blacks and Hurricanes legend TJ Perenara this Saturday. The Hurricanes, who finished top of the table, will host the men from Hamilton in a highly anticipated clash.
Despite the Hurricanes being the favorites on their home turf, the Chiefs are quietly confident in their ability to cause an upset. Ratima, who has firmly established himself as the Chiefs’ first-choice number nine, has been compared to Perenara in his style of play.
“He’s a good fella, man,” Ratima told Stuff. “He gets around us young guys. He’s a real good fellow to talk to, even around personal life and stuff like that.”
Like the experienced Perenara, the 23-year-old Ratima is known for his combative approach and eye for the try-line, having scored eight tries this season – one more than his rival. While the two will be fierce opponents on the pitch, Ratima holds Perenara in high regard and looks forward to a friendly chat with the 80-Test veteran after the match.
Ratima also spoke fondly of the influence former All Black Brad Weber had on his development, praising the ex-Chiefs player’s composure and ability to remain calm under pressure.
“The way he spoke to the boys, the way he was able to, in pressure moments, to calm himself to speak in a normal tone. And not let his emotions get the best of him,” Ratima said.
As the rugby union community eagerly awaits the semi-final clash between the Hurricanes and Chiefs, all eyes will be on the battle between scrum-halves Ratima and Perenara, two talented players set to showcase their skills in a crucial Super Rugby Pacific encounter.
