Today, Super League boasts just two teams from outside the rugby league heartlands – the London Broncos and the highly successful Catalans Dragons. In light of the RFL’s search for a new club for the 2025 season, five potential expansion destinations have emerged that could shape the future of rugby league:
Bedford: The town’s strong rugby union talent pool and its location with excellent transport links make it an intriguing prospect. If the Bedford Tigers gain League One status, they could potentially make a compelling case for a future Super League spot.
Cornwall: With a population of over 500,000 and a rapidly growing fan base, Cornwall has already made strides in the RFL system. The club’s potential move to a brand-new stadium in Truro could further boost its prospects.
Cumbria: This rugby league heartland has long been touted as a potential Super League destination, with the idea of a combined Cumbrian club garnering significant support from fans. The success of the pre-World Cup Cumbrian team suggests the region’s appetite for the sport.
Belgrade: Serbian champions Red Star Belgrade had previously applied to join League One, and their established structure, strong branding, and growing participation in Serbia make them an intriguing option for expansion.
Amsterdam: The Netherlands’ growing rugby league audience and the potential for a historic pre-season match between Hull KR and York Knights in 2025 could pave the way for a Super League team in the Dutch capital.
