Rugby Codes Unite to Honor Late Legend Rob Burrow in Finals Tributes
BBC Rugby Union, 8 June 2023
The worlds of rugby league and rugby union will come together on Saturday, 8 June, to pay tribute to the late Rob Burrow, a true legend of the game. Burrow, who passed away at the age of 41 after a brave battle with motor neurone disease (MND), will be honored during the Challenge Cup and Gallagher Premiership finals.
The matches, which will kick off simultaneously at 3 pm BST, will see a minute’s applause take place after seven minutes of play, commemorating Burrow’s iconic number seven jersey worn throughout his illustrious 16-year career with the Leeds Rhinos.
Leeds Rhinos’ women’s team will face off against St Helens in the Women’s Challenge Cup final, followed by the Men’s Challenge Cup final between Warrington Wolves and Wigan Warriors at Wembley Stadium. Meanwhile, Northampton Saints and Bath will compete in the Gallagher Premiership final at Twickenham.
Burrow’s close friend and former teammate, Kevin Sinfield, who is currently an assistant coach for the England national rugby union team, has been instrumental in raising millions for MND charities. A statue of the pair is also planned to be erected outside the Rhinos’ Headingley home.
“Saturday provides us with an opportunity to celebrate his life for everyone at the stadium and also the BBC TV audience,” said Rhodri Jones, Rugby League Commercial managing director. “All teams will show their support for Rob and their support for the battle he championed against MND.”
Premiership Rugby also echoed these sentiments, stating, “Premiership Rugby will unite with The Rugby Football League and pay tribute to Rob Burrow with a round of applause after seven minutes of the Gallagher Premiership Rugby Final. Rob was truly inspirational. As he said: ‘In a world full of adversity we must still dare to dream.’“
The emotional tributes will undoubtedly resonate with rugby fans across the country, as they come together to honor the legacy of a true sporting icon who leaves an indelible mark on both the rugby league and rugby union communities.
