Brumbies Triumph Over Rebels in Penalty-Heavy Encounter
The ACT Brumbies have secured a commanding 53-17 victory over the Melbourne Rebels at GIO Stadium, despite having three players yellow-carded in a penalty-heavy encounter. The Brumbies’ resilient defense and clinical attack proved too much for a Rebels side still seeking their maiden Super Rugby Pacific finals berth.
“It’s obviously quite a physical game,” acknowledged Brumbies coach Stephen Larkham, with referee Angus Gardner penalizing both sides heavily. “I thought he handled it pretty well,” Larkham added.
Despite the Rebels enjoying a numerical advantage at times due to the Brumbies’ yellow cards, they were unable to capitalize, as the home team’s backs ran riot. The Brumbies scored three tries in a scintillating seven-minute spell, with fullback Tom Wright and winger Corey Toole particularly impressive.
While the Rebels did manage two tries of their own, the Brumbies’ dominance was evident throughout, with captain Allan Alaalatoa praising his team’s improved performance compared to their previous defeat against the Crusaders.
The victory further dents the Rebels’ hopes of securing a maiden finals berth, as their potentially final-ever Super Rugby Pacific season continues to slip away, with five consecutive losses.
