Thrilling Victory for Italy in Women’s Six Nations Clash Against Ireland
In a captivating Women’s Six Nations encounter at the RDS Arena in Dublin, Italy overcame a late surge from Ireland to clinch a hard-fought 27-21 victory.
Hooker Vittoria Vecchini was the standout performer for the Azzurre, scoring a brace of tries that proved pivotal in the outcome. Vecchini’s first try came in the 25th minute, as she barged her way over the line from close range. She then repeated the feat in the second half, crossing the whitewash following a superb break from winger Alyssa D’Inca.
Italy’s victory was further cemented by tries from Valeria Fedrighi and Aura Muzzo, the latter diving over in the corner just minutes after having a score disallowed for a forward pass.
The home side had taken an early lead when Vittoria Ostuni Minuzzi was sin-binned for a deliberate knock-on, with referee Hollie Davidson awarding Ireland a penalty try. However, the Azzurre’s resilience and clinical finishing proved too much for the hosts to overcome.
“Ireland refused to give in, and a late intercept try from Katie Corrigan, converted by Dannah O’Brien, narrowed the deficit to just six points with a minute remaining. The home crowd of 6,605 – a record for the Women’s Six Nations – roared their side on, but Italy held firm in the final stages to secure a crucial victory.”
The result is the perfect response for Italy after their opening-weekend thrashing at the hands of defending champions England. The Azzurre now sit third in the Women’s Six Nations table after two rounds.
Sadly, Ireland’s Lauren Delaney was carried off on a stretcher with a neck injury shortly before half-time, but the player was later seen sitting amongst the substitutes.
