Wallaroos Urge Fans to Stay Optimistic Despite Loss to Canada
On May 11, 2024, the Australian Wallaroos women’s rugby team faced off against the Canadian Maple Leafs in the 2024 Pacific Four Series match at Allianz Stadium in Sydney. Despite the 33-14 loss, the Wallaroos are urging their dedicated fans to stay optimistic, as the team has shown significant improvements since their previous encounter against Canada.
The unbeaten Canadians once again proved too powerful and precise for the Wallaroos, with all five of their tries coming from the front row. The visitors’ dominant driving maul proved a constant challenge for the Australian side, who were unable to contain the Maple Leafs’ forward onslaught.
“It’s just going back to fixing our execution a little bit on our detail and bringing a little bit more physicality next week,” – Wallaroos captain, Michaela Leonard
However, the Wallaroos’ head coach, Jo Yapp, was left encouraged by her team’s performance, which showcased vast improvements from their last meeting with Canada 10 months ago. Talented wingers Maya Stewart and Desiree Miller, along with powerful flanker Siokapesi Palu, provided glimpses of the Wallaroos’ attacking potential, but poor handling and execution prevented them from truly threatening the fourth-ranked Canadians.
Despite the lopsided scoreline, the Wallaroos’ captain, Michaela Leonard, believes the team will only emerge stronger from this experience, as they turn their focus to next Saturday’s clash with the USA in Melbourne.
The Wallaroos’ dedicated fans are encouraged to keep the faith, as the women’s rugby team continues to make strides in their development and performance, showcasing the depth of talent among female players in the sport.
