BBC Rugby Union: Scott Barrett Named All Blacks Captain as Robertson Unveils First Squad
In a significant move, new All Blacks head coach Scott Robertson has named Scott Barrett as the team’s captain for the upcoming season, edging out 2023 World Rugby Player of the Year Ardie Savea for the role.
The decision to appoint Barrett as the skipper was largely influenced by the existing connection between the lock and Robertson, who worked together during their time with the Crusaders, where they secured seven Super Rugby titles in as many seasons before Robertson took over the All Blacks.
“There are some great leaders in our group, but having that existing connection to Scott was important. He’s tactically astute, he leads from the front, and he’s got the respect of the players and coaches,” Robertson explained.
While Savea will not don the captain’s armband, Robertson emphasized that the leadership responsibilities will be shared, with the flanker, Jordie Barrett, and the wider leadership group playing crucial roles in the team’s preparations for the first Test against England.
The 32-man All Blacks squad features a mix of experienced and youthful talent, with much of the core that reached the 2023 World Cup final being retained. However, notable absentees include Aaron Smith, Richie Mo’unga, Brodie Retallick, and Shannon Frizell, who are currently plying their trade in Japan, as well as the retiring Sam Whitelock.
Addressing the captaincy role, Scott Barrett expressed his humility and the sense of responsibility that comes with leading the iconic team.
“It’s a big responsibility, but I have two great leaders beside me in Ardie and Jordie, and I know we’ll have the full backing of the coaches,” he said.
The squad also features several uncapped players, including George Bell, Pasilio Tosi, Cortez Ratima, Billy Proctor, and Wallace Sititi, with the latter’s inclusion being particularly noteworthy after his standout season for the Chiefs.
As the All Blacks prepare for the upcoming fixtures against England and Fiji in July, the coaching staff is confident in the squad’s ability to deliver the style of rugby they want to see in 2024.
