The All Blacks Receive a Boost Ahead of the Rugby Championship
In a significant move, the All Blacks have secured the services of “world-class” flanker Dalton Papali’i, who has inked a new deal with New Zealand Rugby (NZR) that will keep him in the country until the end of 2027.
Papali’i’s contract extension means he will continue to play for both the Super Rugby Pacific champions, the Blues, and Counties Manukau in the NPC. The 26-year-old openside has been a mainstay for the All Blacks, having made 34 Test appearances since his debut against Japan in 2018.
“I’m loving my footy right now at every level and home is where the heart is, so it was an easy decision to remain in New Zealand and run it back with the Blues next year,” Papali’i said. The new contract will take him through to the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia, a prospect he is eager to be a part of.
All Blacks head coach Scott Robertson has praised Papali’i’s development, describing him as a “world-class loose forward who brings physicality and work rate on both sides of the ball.” Robertson believes retaining Papali’i for the next three years is a “great result” for New Zealand rugby.
The announcement has been welcomed by NZR General Manager Professional Rugby and Performance, Chris Lendrum, and Blues GM of Rugby, Murray Williams, who both expressed their delight at securing the services of the talented flanker.
Blues head coach Vern Cotter also shared his enthusiasm, stating, “I’ve really loved Dalt’s work this year, he was a great contributor to the success of this season. It’s great for the Blues that he’s signed on for another couple of seasons, and I look forward to working with him again next year.”
With Papali’i’s future now secured, the All Blacks can focus on the upcoming Rugby Championship, where they will look to build on their strong performances and continue their dominance in the international arena.
