In the wake of Huddersfield Giants’ decision to part ways with head coach Ian Watson, Sky Sports pundit Sam Tomkins has offered a brutally honest assessment of the move. The ex-Salford Red Devils boss, who spent over two years at the John Smith’s Stadium, was relieved of his duties following a run of just one win in nine games across all competitions.

Tomkins, a two-time Man of Steel, acknowledged that Watson’s dismissal was not entirely surprising, given the team’s largely underwhelming performance over the past 18 months. The pundit noted that despite a strong 2022 season that saw Huddersfield finish third in the Super League and narrowly miss out on silverware in the Challenge Cup final, the recent 48-0 thrashing at the hands of Warrington Wolves last Friday ultimately sealed Watson’s fate.

“I don’t think it is surprising,” Tomkins said via Sky Sports’ social media channels. “We’re in a results-based industry, this is his fourth year in charge at Huddersfield and you’d have to say he’s not changed a great deal in that time, which is what he was signed to do.”

With the Giants now eight points off the play-off spots and the second half of the season looming, Tomkins believes the club is in dire need of a “big change” to ignite a turnaround in their fortunes. The Sky Sports pundit expects an interim boost in performance under the guidance of assistant coach Luke Robinson, who has taken charge on a temporary basis.

“I think there’s clearly some conflict in that group between players and coach,” Tomkins added. “People like Jake Connor that have been pushed on the outer, maybe get more of a chance now, but I think it’s important as a group that they drive it themselves.”

As Huddersfield prepare to face the Leigh Leopards in a pivotal play-off clash this weekend, Tomkins emphasized the importance of the senior players, such as Chris Hill, stepping up to lead the team through this transitional period.

The dismissal of Ian Watson marks a significant moment in Huddersfield Giants’ Super League campaign, and with the search for a new head coach underway, the club will be hoping to capitalize on the potential spark provided by a change in leadership.
