BBC Rugby Union: Gatland Seeks Clarity on Disallowed Try as Wales’ Woes Continue
In the aftermath of Wales’ 25-16 defeat to Australia, head coach Warren Gatland has expressed his frustration over the lack of 50/50 decisions going his team’s way. Gatland feels that the disallowed try by James Botham was a pivotal moment in the match, and he plans to seek clarity from the officials on the decision.
Wales’ recent run of form has been a major cause for concern, as they have now suffered eight consecutive defeats – their worst streak since 2012-2013. The Wallabies, under the guidance of newly appointed coach Joe Schmidt, clinched the victory courtesy of tries from Taniela Tupou, Filipo Daugunu, and Tom Wright, while Wales were awarded a penalty try.
“I need to get some clarity on that disallowed try from the maul,” Gatland told Sky Sports. “At the moment, we’re not getting any of the 50/50 calls, and we just have to work through that.”
Reflecting on the match, Gatland acknowledged that Wales’ high turnover count and early concession of penalties hindered their momentum. However, he remained optimistic about the team’s performance, citing the “lots of good things” and the physicality of the encounter.
Despite the disappointing result, the Wales head coach found some positives in his team’s performance, highlighting the “glimpses” of development towards the next Rugby World Cup. Gatland acknowledged the mounting pressure due to the losing run but remains confident that his side can turn things around, especially if they can secure a few more favorable decisions from the match officials.
The two teams will meet again next week, as Wales look to bounce back and end their eight-game losing streak against the Wallabies.
