BBC Rugby Union: Wales Player Ratings After Defeat to South Africa

Following a tough 41-13 loss to the Springboks in their mid-year international clash at Twickenham on Saturday, here are the player ratings for the Wales national rugby union team.

Fullback Cameron Winnett impressed during the Six Nations but struggled to make an impact against the relentless South African defense. Winger Liam Williams, however, gave a tireless effort, providing an excellent outlet on the kick-chase to help Wales gain valuable field position.

In the midfield, center Owen Watkin failed to get involved, as he continues to search for a convincing performance at this level. Teammate Mason Grady showed some promising defensive reads and physicality in attack, but didn’t have enough opportunities to showcase his full abilities.

Winger Rio Dyer, one of Wales’ shining lights over the past year, endured a difficult outing, receiving a yellow card early on and struggling defensively at times.

Flyhalf Sam Costelow had a mixed display, missing a penalty but also making some smart decisions in the first half, before struggling after the break. Debutant scrumhalf Ellis Bevan, meanwhile, put in a solid performance, considering the challenges faced by the pack.

Backrower Aaron Wainwright was Wales’ standout performer, impressing on both sides of the ball, while fellow flanker Taine Plumtree was a promising disruptive force at the lineout and maul.

In the tight five, lock Ben Carter and hooker Dewi Lake, the captain, were the pick of the bunch, with Lake also scoring a well-taken try and leading from the front.

However, prop Keiron Assiratti was overpowered at the scrum by Springboks tighthead Ox Nche, and was replaced at half-time. The Wales replacements were unable to provide any meaningful impact late in the game as the result slipped away.

“Overall, it was a tough day at the office for the Welsh, who were outmatched by the ruthless Springboks. They will need to regroup quickly ahead of their next challenge.”
