BBC Rugby Union: Sharks Pursue Springbok Hooker Dweba Amidst Stormers Tug-of-War
In the latest rugby union transfer news, Sale Sharks are keen on signing South African hooker Joseph Dweba from the Stormers. This comes despite an earlier failed bid by the Sharks to pry Dweba away from the Cape Town-based United Rugby Championship side.
Dweba, 28, has won six caps since making his debut in the 2021 Rugby Championship victory over Argentina. The hooker has played 20 times for the Stormers this season, having joined the club from Bordeaux in 2022. He started his career in Super Rugby with the Cheetahs and is highly rated by Sharks boss Alex Sanderson, who is seeking to bolster his hooking options. However, Dweba is believed to be keen on staying in South Africa this summer.
Elsewhere, Saracens have been dealt a blow in their search for a new lock, as England under-20 international Joel Kpoku has signed a three-year deal with French side Pau. The 24-year-old from Newham, who started his career in Rugby League with London Skolars, had been linked with a return to North London.
The Stormers, meanwhile, are embroiled in a tug-of-war with the Bulls over the services of scrum-half Paul de Wet, despite him having another year left on his contract. Bulls director of rugby Jake White is keen to secure De Wet’s services, but the Stormers are desperate to retain the 28-year-old, who made 17 appearances last season and scored one try in the URC quarter-final defeat to Glasgow.
In other news, Premiership champions Northampton Saints have launched a search for a new centre, while Exeter Chiefs and Newcastle Falcons are also looking to strengthen their midfield. Top 14 outfit Lyon, who finished 11th this season, are desperately seeking to improve their front row, having failed to secure deals for several hookers in recent months.
Newly-promoted Top 14 side Vannes have also been busy in the transfer market, signing four players and targeting a loosehead, tighthead, two back rows, an inside centre and a full-back as they prepare for their debut season in the French top flight.
Meanwhile, former South Africa head coach Heyneke Meyer has revealed his desire to leave Major League Rugby outfit Houston Sabercats when his contract expires later this year, sparking speculation about his future.
