With several established stars given the summer off, Scotland head coach Gregor Townsend has named a 37-man squad packed with fresh faces for the upcoming tour of North and South America. The team will face Canada, USA, Chile, and Uruguay in successive weeks in July.
Notably, the squad features ten uncapped players, four of whom have previous involvement with the national setup. Sale wing Arron Reed and Leicester prop Will Hurd were previously included in Scotland’s Six Nations squad, while Max Williamson and Matt Currie have gained experience through the national team’s training and ‘A’ games.
One intriguing selection is Dylan Richardson, who won a single cap as a flanker against Japan in 2021 but has since made a positional switch to hooker with South African side Sharks.
“We will judge who we believe is the best person to get this opportunity, for them to grow and also help the team win,” – Gregor Townsend, Scotland Head Coach
Townsend highlighted the potential of the new inclusions, spotlighting six players making their first senior call-ups, including scrum-half Gus Warr, hookers Robbie Smith and Patrick Harrison, prop Nathan McBeth, lock Ewan Johnson, and back-rower Gregor Brown.
With established names like Finn Russell, Ben White, Blair Kinghorn, and Zander Fagerson rested, as well as Darcy Graham and Andy Christie still recovering from injuries, this tour presents a prime chance for the up-and-coming talents to stake their claim for a regular spot in the Scotland setup.
